$6.95 for a glass of this rose' sparkling wine at Nana's Restaurant in Durham, NC. Had in the bar area before sitting down to dinner. Pale pinkish-rose color. Steady stream of bubbles, medium to large size mousse. Quite chilled. Strawberry nose and flavor, only slightly yeasty. Quite refreshing. Nice sparkler. Bartenders/waiters were impressed with it too. It was a new addition to the wine list at Nana's and the waiters and bartenders were trying it so they could advise customers.
(I really indulged on the food that evening--after seeing the national tour company of "Movin' Out"--Billy Joel/Twyla Tharp.) I went for the fatty and the expensive. Seared foie gras appetizer over wood-smoked bacon, sweet oinions and Perigeaux truffles with wonderful balsamic sauce. (They only put the foie gras on the menu the day before my visit I think they said and their supply was going fast). My entree was Niman Ranch pork with trumpet mushrooms, Savoy cabbage and herbed Spatzle (egg noodles). Finished the meal with a trio of cheeses--Spanish bleu cheese, sheep's milk cheese and smoked Gouda with crostini (agonized over the cheese or the bittersweet chocolate tart with peppermint mousse.)
Scott Howell, Nana's chef, is well know throughout southeastern states. He has now added a casual restaurant in Durham (seafood mainly I think) and a chophouse in Raleigh. Hope he doesn't overextend and let Nana's slide.
Wines with dinner under Spanish wines.
