Hello,

Do you know that Zinfandel and Primitivo was cousins or brothers?
It's interesting to see the difference in between an american Zin and an Italian Primitivo.
please let me know if you got more?

Hi Gmtl; it is my understanding that the DNA of Zinfandel and Primitivo are identical. Was not able to raise that website.

gmtl,

That Italian site is incorrect - Primitivo did not father Zinfandel. They are natural clones of a single variety, and both are identical to a grape called Crljenak. That grape has been grown in Croatia for probably more than a thousand years, having come most likely from either Greece or Albania. Primitivo came to Italy about 250 years ago, and Zinfandel came to the U.S. in the 1820's.

I was wondering when you'd say something KC. I remember reading about that several months ago in WS, and having quite a lengthy conversation with you about it! I'll try and search the site to see if I can find the archive.

Tried the link to double check and the site won't directly link to it.

Here goes: www.winespectator.com
click on "advanced search"
search for "crljenak croatia zinfandel"
first article "Researchers Solve Mystery
on Zinfandel's Origin"
