2001 Bogle Merlot, California

We're investigating West Coast Merlot on another forum this month (I may open an Australian Merlot and La Source from France which is 100% Merlot as well). The question posed was "Was Miles right?" (a reference to the dissing of Merlot in the movie "Sideways.") Once again Bogle comes through with a good QPR although I would not want to drink this frequently.
Probably around $8.00 at time of purchase.
Recent vintages (and probably the 2001 as well) are aged in American oak barrels for 12 months. Alcolhol by volume is between 13% and 14%. This wine did not taste tired five years after harvest. The winery is in Clarksburg, CA in the Sacramento Valley but I'm not sure where the Merlot grapes were sourced within California.

Dark purple color. Dense and opaque. Nose of dark plums and some mocha suggestions. Similar flavors. Some sediment on the final glass. Okay with beef stew or even chicken.

As ww suggests on the tread currently below on Mt Veeder, most New World Merlot deserves the rap that "Sideways" deldt it. We shy away from just about all Merlot under $20 because they usually come out "plums and oak." Can't afford to buy too many more expensive ones, so our Merlot intake in very low.

We currently have three in the house. Two are East Bank Bordeaux and one is a 2001 Pahlmeyer Napa Valley Merlot that was a gift. It is not that we are against the poor grape, it is just that proper growing conditions for it are scarce, and then it has to be treated properly by the vinter. Grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Zinfandel, and even in my opinion, Pinot Noir are more forgiving.

Agree with all of those comments. Would also add that when you find one that is really good, it is such a treat!

The 02 Duckhorn Napa Valley is REALLY good.

I'd give a vote in for Ch Ste Michelle. They have several single vineyard selections that are definitely up to or above par.
