2001 Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

I just got a bottle of 2001 Chateau Laplagnotte-Bellevue Saint-Emilion Grand Cru. Since it is a Grand Cru, is it ready to drink?

This is a good B wine that is mature right now.

I just opened it. It's pretty good, sort of average I think, but certainly not worth the $27 I paid for it. It's not as sweet as a Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, certainly more earthy, but less bold.

I like California Cabs better, and will probably stick with them from now on.

I would not stop tasting a very well regarded region based on only one taste of a wine that may not be representative. Also, you note that this was a Saint Emilion which is also mostly a merlot dominant blend versus the cab that you seem to like.

Everyone has their own taste and palate and you are certainly going to ahve your preferences. However, just did not want you to miss a good thing based on just onne wine from a region. Keep tasting and keep trying! The 2000's are a lot more dense and robust. Try one from a good producer and you may be surprised, ...or not [img]http://www.wines.com/ubb2/smile.gif[/img]

There's the difference between old world and new world wines for you. I think I read somewhere a while back that Chateau Laplagnotte-Bellevue is owned by E. Guigal. Can anyone verify this?

Thanks for the correction. I have tasted some very good and moderately priced Bordeaux reds, I just was very disappointed with this one. It tasted like an average Merlot with a lot of funk thrown in, you know, mouldy wood flavors and the like. I have a couple of other Bordeaux bottles from other places that I will try soon.

Now, back to Cali Cabs for a while!
