2002 Ch. Lagrange

My mom died very peacefully in the early hours of Saturday morning, only a few weeks short of her 94th birthday. After spending a long day on arrangements, D, sister and BIL gathered last night for an improvised supper of sandwiches (roast beef, ham, turkey) provided by D's business partner, augmented with pasta salad and cole slaw. Considered the 1990 La Grande Dame but opted instead for this St Julien to honor her, considering the beef.

Beautiful wine, deep red in the glass, with nose of lead pencil, tobacco leaf and subtle violets. More of all on the palate, a bit of cedar showing, with roses joining the violets. Wonderful long finish. Much too young but delightful even now.

Aw..that is sad news. No matter what age you are or she was, losing Mom is losing Mom. You were lucky to have her with you as long as you did. I'll keep you, D, and family in prayer, especially over the next few days. On a lighter note, it was just about a year ago I was packing my bags for San Antonio and making dinner plans with you. Gee, that year has flown!

Deepest condolences.

My mom just had her 80th bday, and I just realized she suddenly got old! Funny how that works: the only thing constant in life is that nothing is. I only hope she can make it to be as old as your mom was.

We're so very sad to hear that, Gil. It was just a year ago next week that Judy's mom passed. We're still thinking about her. I'm sure you're mom will be with you for years to come.

She had been in a nursing home for almost a year, but I had continued to keep her supplied with Port; one of my daily visits each month entailed carrying a bottle of Fonseca Bin 27 to her, concealed in a wine tote (it was a church-sponsored nursing home, and she didn't want the word to get out that she enjoyed a tiny nip each evening). Her real preference was Ch. d'Yquem, but she settled for the Port. Quite a lady.

Sounds like my kinda girl! Best thoughts as you face the next few days. Don't know when I'll be bopping out your way again, but it was such a fun trip I'll be thinking about making another one.

My sympathies. My mother is 92 and I hope she lives to 100 or more. She was looking good at Christmas (much younger than her years) but came down with the stomach flu after her return to Lincoln from my sister's in Iowa.
