Having been impressed with a Jean-Marc Morey Chassagne-Montrachet Les Chenevottes at a NYC restaurant, I was eager to try this one. I opened it 9/04/05, evening before Labor Day. A bit of cork fell into the bottle but didn't make too much of a mess.
Pale to medium-gold color. Faint vanilla/tapioca custard flavor. A light spice note and light suggestion of French oak--allows Chardonnay grape to show through the oak. White melon flavor? or just nice, crisp Chardonnay? Light and elegant mid-palate but provides a lingering finish. Primary nose and flavor. Well balanced. Would be interesting to try again in 2012.
Food friendly. Paired with baked chicken/broccoli/onion/smoked cheddar cheese dish. Lost some freshness by the fourth evening.
The comments of a salesclerk at Macarthur Beverages in DC and my two experiences with white Burgundies from Jean-Marc Morey bear evidence that he has a deft touch with the French oak barrels and doesn't over "toast" the delicate wines. (Some of his relatives may have a heavier hand with the wood). While I prefered the Chenevottes to the Caillerets, I look forward to future purchases from this domaine (if I can afford them).
