Which Red Wine?

I am rather new to wines and what goes with what. I would love to have a wine with pasta and I was told that red wine would be my best choice. Is this so? If this is true, could anyone reccomend a great red wine?

If the pasta has a tomato sauce, you may want to pair it with Chianti or another hearty red Italian wine. If the pasta has a white, alfredo sauce, you may go for a Riesling Kabinett from Germany or Alsace or an Italian white wine. The other ingredients of the pasta may influence the pairing also.
