Which Italian wine is most similar to Jamican Rum

Which Italian wine is most similar to Jamican/Cayman Island...rums? I need an Italian wine that can be used as glazing, pastery, instead of rum. But with the rum 'taste'.

Hi THX and welcome to the Wine Board. The only wine I can think of and it is a stretch, is Marsala.

This Marsala...is it a hard wine find? What makes it a 'good' replacement for rum?

If you want a rum taste, the best I can think of is to use rum. Nothing that I can think of, other than rum, will taste like rum.

But if you want something Italian that will work as a glazing medium try Vermouth or Anasette (sp).

So a Vermouth or Annasette(spelling) would make better sweet glaving then Marsala? Why? Those other two are not as sweet as Marsala?

Marsala should be found wherever wine is sold. Taking Foodie's advice, a sweet Cinzano (Italian Vermouth if you will) would work, but still not taste like rum.

For one thing, Marsala would give it a brown haze. For another, sweet Vermouth or clear Anisette (maybe that is the correct spelling--we'll keep trying) are sweet. Ouzo too.

I don't recall rum being so sweet; the Coca Cola was. But I haven't had a rum and coke in decades.

So why don't you just use rum? You know, there is an Italian style rum cake.

While I love Marsala and rum, I have to chime in and say that Marsala tastes nothing like rum, imho.

The posters are right when they say "rum tastes like rum." Fact is, it's the ONLY thing that tastes like rum. That said, if you don't have access to rum, write your own recipe. With an ingredient other than rum, it will never be able to emulate the old recipe. IMHO, time to move on, write something new. Why not start with ingredients available locally? That's why every area's local cuisine IS their local cuisine.
