The British are looking for a competent organizer who can guarantee the opening and closing ceremonies for their Oplympic venue in 2012 will be as spectacilar as Beijings'. Will have a budget of 14 dollars and 60 cents. Must ovwershadow the Chinese fiasco. WW

You have to give China their due -- pretty spectacular overall. Great Britain will pale in comparison.

I also thought that the show was pretty spectacular. I've watched it a few times since in a few different languages and different camera angles and they certainly were no less incredible.

However, I'm not sure that this has not made London's job in fact more simple. No one will ever expect that they will be able to match the show. In fact, I would even be more motivated to spend less now knowing this. China ia a country with great resources but that reported $300 million on just the opening ceremony could've gone to other uses, perhaps ones with greater urgency such as medical equipment and farm aid. I understand the need to promote the country and ultimately that may bring a great return to the country but the cost of the games is an investment that all the people of the country bore. London has no need to do that nor would I suspect have the same poliitcal will or freedom to have that type of expenditure for the games.

I remember reading that the Canadian government is contributing something to the effect of $20 million for the opening ceremonies for the 2010 Vancouver olympics.
