2001 Marquis-Phillips Shiraz

A blockbuster. Opaque purple in the glass. Big nose of blackberry, blueberry, caramel, vanilla and white chocolate. Rich, lush, like flavors, low acid but not flabby, and some spice. Tannins are sweet and smooth. Very seamless and finishes long. My kind of wine to sip in front of a fire this damp evening in Maryland. $13 by the case. 14.5% Alc/vol. If you enjoy big shiraz, this is a case buy. This line of '01 Marquis-Phillips, (shiraz, cab and Sarah's Blend) is a tremendous effort at unbelievable pricing.

Agree on these Drew, in fact they are my winemakers of the year with the 4 $12 offerings (shiraz, cab, sarahs blend & merlot) all 90-93 point wines. had the merlot last night and since this was the least hyped of the 4 I was expecting a letdown but NOOOOOOO. wonderful body, copius fruit little acidity and 30 second finish with oh so smooth tannins. 91-92 points.

you two are right on the money about this line. have tried them all, and LOVE the shiraz, merlot and cab. i am lucky to have a case and a half of the shiraz... and wish i had more!

I resurrected this thread because I opened my second bottle of the 2001 Marquis Philips Shiraz three nights ago.
Dark purple lightening to deep ruby at the rim; opaque (as Drew indicated). Stains tongue and fingers.
Very fragrant nose of black raspberries, black currants. Flavor of jammy dark fruits; mouthfilling; hint of wood influence but integrated, not out-of-balance; long finish; bit of pepper spice in the finish.
I paired with broiled steak, German potato sald and broccoli. Could be a match for barbeque or strongly flavored grilled beef or game such as venison or buffalo.
I have two more bottles of this left.

Pulled one the other night to pair with a rich beef stew, bad match. The wine overwhelmed, beat-up and stomped on the stew. This wine is your 300 lb. aunt Matilda comming to Thanksgiving dinner, uninvited, and complaining of her 4 ex-husbands for the entire 2 hour meal. [img]http://www.wines.com/ubb2/biggrin.gif[/img]
