Marquis-Philips Sarah's blend, '04

Creamy nose of melon mixed with plum. The palate has much of the same, add apple butter and a touch of wet earth (in a good way); Maybe a little nut also. Very refined and full of finesse. The finish brings out the fruit filled finish with a touch of sweetness. The finish sticks with you for a good bit.

Extremely pleased with this wine. The price makes me even more impressed; A definate Daily drinker. Word is the '06 will be the last vintage the two (Marquis and Philips) will share,; But as far as I know, just a rumor.

Foodie might even like this wine, although I might be pushing the enveolope just a bit.

I can't put this one down; I'll finish the bottle tonight.

Brappy, was this the Sarah's or Hollys blend? Your description sounds like a white which is the Hollys Blend.

Wow, rereading this you're right it does sound like a white. But no, it was the Sarah's blend. There was the red fruit on the palate; I guess I just jotted down the distinguishing characteristics setting this apart from some of M-P's other shirazes. And maybe the wine was getting to me. Ooooops

FWIW, I feel the Sarah's Blend is the best of the bunch of the MP Wines. Haven't tried the '04's. Still have a bunch of the '01 and '02 line up.

i definitely thought the '04 vintage was the best sarah's blend i had tried, but i still prefer the regular bottling of their shiraz.

of course, the "9" and the "Integrity" are the real stars, but at higher and *much* higher price points, respectively.

drew: the '04 shiraz is definitely worth a try. my favorite of this bottling by far since the '01 vintage.

Hey Newsguy,

I was in Tarpon briefly yesterday and just happened to drop in to B-21. Picked up four bottles, two Spanish, one Chianti, and one Cotes du Rhone. It took me all of five minutes, as I already know the "specials" are always good, and they keep them up front. I love that place. Thanks again for turning me on to them.

thanks, drew. and i'd suggest decanting the '04 shiraz for a little while to let it calm down.

and you're welcome, bern. hard to go wrong at B-21 in terms of price and selection. and their wine staff (mark, steve, rhett and john) really know their stuff. btw, you should seriously consider attending their tastings. always a bargain (tickets are $20-$30 and include hors d'ouvres) and tons of good wine. the usually have five or six regular tastings a year. always from 3-6 p.m. sunday

Brappy, I don't think so. Apple butter and red wine just don't strike my fancy.

Truth be told--I hate apple butter

All I can say is: it's Shiraz; where's the spice and pepper???

I did buy an '04 Sarah's Blend just to compare to your notes Brappy. I have to say that I never experienced flavors that you reported in this shiraz/cab blend . Will post my notes before the weekends' out.

Wow, I'll try again as I can't find the actual notes I wrote down. You guys are making think I typed the wrong notes for this wine..... which is possible. I tasted several wines that night and may have typed notes from another wine. I didn't put the notes in my "note folder." Oh well.... good excuse to have another.
