1959 Fossi Chianti Classico Riserva

I opened my oldest bottle in the cellar last Saturday night at dinner, and was expecting the worst. Not so! Though the wine was beyond peak, it was still drinkable, and even enjoyable. Also, after about a half an hour, the wine really started to come to life with the hot sausage calazones we were all having (now wishing I had more.) I do have plenty of the 74' left, and it's going to be enjoyed immensely!

These old Fossi Riservas are usually stable, just not particularly interesting. What they actually are doing is buying bulk wine that meets the DOCG spec and then storing it in huge inert containers (which stop most development) and then bottling them as needed for their sales. This gives a steady supply of drinkable wine from vintages sentimental to customers but are not really indicative of an old, bottle aged Riserva. I am surprised no one in Bordeaux has thought of this...
