1999 Il Vescovo, Primitivo, Puglia (IGT). Smelled and tasted like a barnyard, and little else. Neither crisp nor tannic, which did not bode well for the future. The near zero acidity, very "unzinlike", caused firworks of the mouth when washing the after dinner salad down with it. Had decanted it an hour before dinner in case it need a break, but tasting before and after showed little difference. The good news is we had hamburger with it. The bad news is it was good hamburger. Two mitigating factors: 1. It might have been corked (can never tell for sure); and 2. Mrs IK liked it! "It was nice, nice balance;" and we drank out the same carafe. We do have a second bottle. If it is appreciably better, will report so here.

Had the second bottle tonight, and there was no comparison. The first bottle had to have been a dud for whatever reason. This one was just fine. Mature fruit and black pepper on the nose and forward taste buds, some earthiness across the palate, and a nice finish. Had it with hamburgers again, to be on the safe side, and they were perfect with it. Best we can remember they were two for $12.00, so can't really complain. Much better than getting a $20.00 dud.
