2001 Tobin James, Paso Robles, Sangiovese “Classico” ($18). Alcohol level 15.2%. It is an excellent New World/Old World mélange. The way we were feeling tonight made it perfect. It gave you overripe strawberries with a few grindings of black pepper on the nose and upfront. Very rich and complex with smooth tannin and noticeable oak across the palate, and a very long finish. We enjoyed it with ravioli in tomato sauce and spinach in front of a roaring fire with dim lights and Christmas music in the background. It was all very, very nice. Hope you all have a very Merry Christmas, or otherwise very Happy Holidays.

IK- this was the first bottle I opened from the fall pack, but apparently I forgot to post on it. Your post is dead on the flavors! I can taste it all over again. But alas, I'm drinking Excelsior Cab right now!

What gives you the indicators for the oak you describe? Is it similar to a faint vanilla flavor/scent?

Just plain ole oak Calgal; the kind we like in reds but Bucko don't.
