Imported by Hart Distributing, Weaverville, NC. On sale for about $23 a bottle for multiple-bottle purchase; normally about $45 a bottle. Jayer-Gilles producer is a cousin of better known Henri Jayer. Producer uses 100% new oak.

Color: brilliant dark red; can see (barely) fingers at stem or sides of glass through the wine. Viscous quality, forming legs on sides of glass.
Nose: powerful bouquet coming together from dark fruits (mulberries, blueberries), violets, earth.
Palate: rich dark fruit, cedar, leather, chewy texture; some fairly mild tannins, lengthy finish.
Could easily be taken for a Premier Cru Burgundy. Indicative of the complexity, at an earlier tasting I sensed more vegetables (mushrooms and beets) and gamey quality (rare beef or oxen) than fruit. This time the fruit seems obvious. Weighs in on the "refined" rather than "rustic" side but has that element of earthiness and gaminess as well as core fruit. I tried this wine twice at a restaurant/wine bar before purchasing six bottles. It still "wows" me!

Had with center slice of baked ham and ziti pasta in a creamy marsala sauce with porcini 'shrooms, black truffles and sliced ripe olives.

Thanks for the TN -- sounds great, and I'll be on the lookout for it!

BTW, I'll be trying another of the Green Pinot Noirs in the next week or so, and I'll let you know how I like it. Also, I posted on a '99 Daniel Gehrs over the weekend that I thought you might like to try.

Thanks. I haven't come across the Daniel Gehrs but think Bassins in DC may carry Patricia Green. I will probably be going up to DC again in February or definitely in March. (They are also holding three bottles of a German wine for me--Von Schubert Maximin Grunhauser Riesling Spatlese). I may check out websites to see if one of the Triangle area wine retailers carries either Patricia Green or Daniel Gehrs.
P.S. I noticed some 1998 Jayer-Gilles wines, including the Cote de Nuits-Villages at Vintage Wines in San Diego over Christmas. When I asked about 1999 or 2000 vintage I was told that the importer deals mostly with eastern outlets so you may be able to find a distributor/retailer connection in Atlanta. Rosenthal may be the distributor in question (although my bottle mentions importing by Hart).
