Not a Pinot expert by no means and want to take some nice pinots to the beach in late July...what should I buy?

First, I'd recommend looking down the thread at WOW's TNs. She knows the grape very well, and I've found her recs to be spot-on. For my part, I've had good stuff recently from Penner-Ash, Sokol Blosser, and Talley. The '03 Hangtime was great, especially for the price. If you can get your hands on a Martinelli, I'd recommend their PNs, too. Let's see, what else . . . Daniel Gehrs is tough to find, but year in and year out a dandy. Oh, also Patricia Green. Loved the stuff from her, too. The '02 Ponzi is supposed to be wonderful, though I can't vouch for it personally (I've enjoyed other vintages). I'm sure I'll think of others once my brain starts working and/or I get off my seat and find my TN log.

I wish I knew what was available in your parts -- what have you been considering?

In the QPR vein, Castle Rock is pretty decent. My new love is the Gary Farrell 2002 Pinot Noir (which I think outshines the 2001) but may be hard to locate. Saintsbury is usually reliable from the light-bodied Garnet to the more serious offerings. I like the 2003 Selby Pinot Noir. Other than that, I tend to favor some from Oregon--Ponzi, Torii Mor, R. Stuart "Big Fire," Argyle, etc. (The basic Argyle is under $20). I have heard good things about Patricia Green wines but haven't yet had one.

These are our "bring to the beachers" in the $10 range: HRM Rex Goliath, Solaras Carneros, BV Coastal, Meridian, Echelon, Smoking Loon, and Pepperwood Grove.

Hi,

I pretty new to all this, but I do know what a good red tastes like, and last week I opened a bottle of Kendell-Jackson pinot noir. It was awesome, IMHO. The vintage was 2003.
