wine tasting in Bordeaux

Interested in wine tasting in Bordeaux. Which Chateaus have american style wine tasting? Or, is it necessary to purchase a wine tour? Is wine tasting at wine merchant stores the best place or another option? I have bought Oz's and wine spectator's book on wine tasting in Bordeaux but they are not direct about the hours and days wineries are open for tasting. They all seem to be by appointment only.
