1993 Les Fiefs de Lagrange, Saint-Julien A.O.C. ($17). Mother is a big Saint Julien fan, so promised to pop this one for Mother's Day. Since we ended up going to a nice bistro in Blue Hill instead, we did the St Julie last night.

When this second bottling from Chateau Lagrange was released five or six years ago, it was accompanied by some good press. So, when we spotted it in a New Hampshire state store shortly thereafter, we grabbed it. It had a nice rest in our "special" rack until last night. Perfect timing.

Cleaned off the bottle and stood it upright in the morning. About an hour before dinner carefully decanted three fours of it, and ran the rest through a dioxon free coffee filter. It was delightfully exotic on the nose, the fruit had morphed into the black fruit mass of a fully developed wine, unique earthiness on the palate like freshed tilled compost, and tannins as smooth as a baby's bum. The comlexity of the totality was stunning. Wish we had grabbed the whole case. The best wine we've had this year.

Married perfectly with a grillpanned porterhouse steak, buried with mushrooms, accompanied by salad augmented with lovage and sorrel from the garden and covered with our own blue cheese dressing.

I have to agree with Mother's taste in Wines.

I really like St. Emillion. Also am a great fan of Nuits St. George. I know, apples and oranges, but still both good wines.

Nice meal also!

My blue cheese dressing consists of a small amount of a mild vinegar and oil emulsion mixed with huge crumbs of blue cheese produced by breaking up the cheese with a fork. Love blue cheese!

Goes well on the top of a good hamburger also.

I am making myself hungry........
