In an attempt to surprise my girlfriend for Valentine's Day, I'm wanting to order a bottle of a wine she told me she really likes. She said it was "Chateau St. Michael," but I've never heard of it and have not been able to find anything about it via a Google search. She said it's not a wine that the usual wine stores carry. Has anyone heard of it? Or perhaps I've missed it a little bit and someone's heard of something similar? Thanks!

Try searching St. Michael Eppan. If I'm correct it's from Northern Italy.

It could even by something from Chateau St. Michelle, a large wine firm in Washington State. But then you would need to know if it's one of several Rieslings or Chardonnays, Cabernet Sauvignon, etc. that they market. You may have to ask her to write down the name of the wine she liked "so that you can try it if you ever see it on a restaurant wine list or in a store." She may catch on but that might be better than ordering the wrong wine to surprise her.

Thank you. I believe it's Chateau St. Michelle, as I remember her telling me they had a Reisling and a Chardonnay. I think she said they had a Pinot, too. Awesome. I appreciate it.

It's possible she may be thinking of Ch. Ste. Michelle's Eroica. That's a Riesling made in collaboration with Ernst Loosen, a winemaker from the Mosel region in Germany. He came to Washington and worked with Bob Bertheau, the Ch. Ste. Michelle winemaker, in the vineyards and in the cellar to produce his style of Riesling with Washington grapes.

Incidentally, there's another Riesling put out by Loosen called Saint M from grapes in his Pfalz vineyards. It's carried as part of the Ch. Ste. Michelle line.

My first choice was to go with CSM from Washington, but that is not a rare wine. It's everywhere which is why I turned to Italy.

Definately ask her!
