What would I serve with a really simple dinner?

Breaded Pork Chops
Mashed Potatoes w/ brown gravy
Steamed String Beans

Hi K. Snipe, and welcome to the Wine Board. The wine that goes best with pork, and with your dinner too as a matter of fact, is pinot noir. A very nice, inexpensive one that is widely available, is Villa Mt Eden, California, Pinot Noir. It runs for around $10.00, and is heavy enough to carry the breading and potatoes without any problem.

Welcome to the board, ksnipe.
For a simple dinner as you suggested, I tend to go for my favorite simple white - Riesling. Since neither are overpowering, I think the two would balance together nicely. I happen to like a Schmitt-Sohne Riesling Qualitatswein (in the blue bottle). It's a great little wine for an outstanding price.
BTW - Are the chops going to be fried? If so, I may change my mind. Of course I'm not as knowledgeable as most of the folks here - they may serve you better. Hope this helps!

Pork and a solid riesling would be a good match, since the Germans and Alsatians grow the best and most complex riesling in the world and eat a lot of pork. A simple rielsing, though, would be overpowered by the brown gravey and probably the fried (as breaded chops often are) chops. A good spatlese level German riesling or an Alsatian may work, but I prefer IK's suggestion of a nice Pinot Noir. Another one to look for is Joseph Drouhin's Laforet Pinot Noir. It is also around 10 bucks and darn good.

Barnsey, I will send that wine soon--you've got to stop saying the Germans and Alsatians produce the best R in the world--there is another place. Soon to come...within a few days.

Finger Lakes region? Long Island area? Most likely Finger Lakes, as the island ain't normally cold enough.
