I'm new to the site and the Wine Board and am learning something daily, thanks to all of you. Today I am wondering if pinot noir has heart healthy benefits. I know that cabernets are supposed to be the "gold standard" for heart health, but really do enjoy pinot noir and would like to think my vessels are gaining a benefit as well. Whites have always been my drink of choice, so am trying to cultivate a red wine appetite. Thanks again for all your insightful wine tips!

All red wines have roughly the same value for your heart.

According to many studies, all consumable alcohol in moderation is beneficial to the cardiac system. Red wine offers additional benefits beyond the alcohol (chemicals like resveratrol, quercetin, and a couple others). So do not quit the whites, unless winoweenie is watching...

After posting the above I remembered one other thing--the reason Pinot Noir has the rep for being better than other wines at protectng the heart:

Resveratrol is found naturally in grape skins; it is used by grapes to fight disease in the vineyard. P. Noir has a high concentration of it because the vine is highly disease-prone. Of course, the chemical gets into the wine because red wine is produced by fermenting on the skins.

Another reason to consume my beloved Burgundies. Thank you, Foodie.

Thanks to all of you, especially Foodie, for informing me why "pinot noir has the rep for being better than other wines at protecting the heart." I had always heard the cabernets were superior in their heart-protective qualities. This is good news!! Now, I can continue "researching" whites and stick to pinot noir for my red. Hey! I'm in Montana, where the buffalo roam and "white" is usually beer and "red" is clamato juice -- this is all a stretch for me and I'm reachin'even getting so familiar with the whites! Thanks again to all of you. A big Montana Howdy to Winoweenie. . .

I read where some Vitis lambrusca grape actually has the most resveratrol of all, but now I forgot which grape it was, since I don't drink that stuff.

It's concord, Bucko, and studies show that Welch's grape juice--which is mainly concord--is loaded with resveratrol.

So we can all quit drinking wine and just drink grape juice since the only reason I drink wine is for my heart.

No, because alcohol itself is the major component that provides cardioprotection.

Don't scare me like that.
