I've been searching the internet for wood racks (individually held bottles) for some time now as my renovations have finally reached my basement. I'm not building a cellar but will have an area where I can build an 600-800 bottle rack area plus rack/table combo. Custom is out of the question due to perceived prices (contractors in Boston still are able to call the shots). After gutting the upper two floors and rebuilding, including a brand new kitchen and three washrooms, the construction reserves are pretty much depleted.
So the basement will be a simple affair and thus no wine cellar for now. The prices of rack kit, while there are reasonable ones, still are of concern based on their construction. It seems to me that the racking systems should be relatively simple to build if you have plans (2x1 plus a bunch of 3/4" and lots of nails.....). Maybe it's not worth the effort....
Anyways, looking for two solutions. (1) Recommendations on a stock rack kit that is good value and looks good (they will be out in the open in the new entertainment space downstairs), or (2) where can I find plans for these units if they exist on the internet (I've not been able to find those).
Many thanks!...heading to Scotland today!

Have a great trip to Scotland. And dress warmly.... it's guaranteed to be cold and wet.
You can equip your storage space with chromed metal racks from Sam's Club for as little as $56 per 168-bottle rack; and they have locking casters, so they can be moved easily. Five of them would handle 840 bottles for a cost of $280. That's about as cheap as you'll find anywhere, and you wouldn't have the hassle of construction, just very simple assembly.

Check out the below thread. This racking system is all wood, cheap, easy to put together and can be stained for a better look.
http://www.wines.com/ubb2/Forum32/HTML/000104.html
Drew
