I know this is a subjective issue, but what are the thoughts on storing wine against the concrete foundation of a basement? I have a "closet" partitioned and insulated from the rest of the finished basement. The temperature varies (gradually) over the seasons from 60 to 67F. Could I keep some decent wines (e.g. '96 Cantemerle, '95 La Lagune) in there for 5 to 10 years without them aging improperly?
Thanks, Warren

Hi Warren and welcome to the board. The gradual increase in temp you describe will not harm the wines. 60-67 will cause the wines to develop slightly faster than the optimum storage temp of 55. You don`t show where you`re from, but if you live in an arid area such as I, you will need to get some humidity in there. Winoweenie

Wino, thanks for the quick feedback. I'm from Chicago, so I think I have enough humidity for us and Phoenix!

If your wine closet is already partitioned and insulated, you might consider adding a cooling unit, to stabilize the temperature & humidity within the proper ranges. There are plenty available, at modest prices, from CoolSpace, Breezeair, etc.
I wish my own cellar problems could be handled so simply. Our consultant says the old storm cellar is really not a viable candidate for service as a long-term storage facility; it would be very difficult to seal and control. He recommends free-standing units and/or a converted closet inside the house.
I'm thinking a new house may be in order.

In my opinion, I think your safe. My cellar is about 55 in winter, & up to 68 in summer. I can also regulate slightly if necessary, as I have an a/c & heat duct I can open and close when necessary. I've been cellaring between 200 to 300 bottles for several years now, and haven't lost one yet due to being past peak. You should be fine.
