my wife finds merlot to heavy and too much tannin, if that's the right spelling. but on the lo carbo diet, we need a dry red wine, but she likes the sweeter, less tannic taste of say a rose. anyone got any ideas about something in between that she can try?

Try other Merlots. Most are bone dry. That's the important thing on this diet. Almost all Roses' and a few Merlots (e.g. Sutter Home, and any mixed with fruit juice) are off dry. Merlot is usually low of tannin, and it should be easy to find one she likes. Try Gallo's Italian offering, Ecco Domani. It is available wherever Gallo is sold.
