Looking for articles/books which provide a beginner with a general understanding of wine.

One of the books I use is the "Larousse Encyclopedia of Wine".

Another you might consider would be Jancis Robinson's "Oxford Companion to Wine"

There is also a "Wine for Dummies" volume, but I've never read it and have not heard any reports about it.

Check with such places as Barnes and Noble or Amazon.com. Use the keyword "Wine" for your search. You will come up with hundreds of titles.

The two I gave you above are very good, but neither is inexpensive.

i highly recommend a book by Willie Gluckstern, call "the Wine Avenger".

it a quick read, and he's a very funny guy. i think he has a website at www.wineavenger.com, and his book is also avialable at amazon.

Regarding the "Wine for Dummies" book. Though I think the "For Dummies" series is a bit out of control - the "Wine for Dummies" book is an excellent introductory book to the world of wine and I would highly recommend it. Written in a very down to earth style, it is filled with useful info and all the basics to get you started learning about wine. It has the added advantage of being inexpensive and widely available.

I went to Barnes and Noble today and spent the better part of the afternoon there.

Wine For Dummies did not impress me at all.

The Oxford Companion for Wine was quite impressive, almost too informative.

The two I reach for the most are:

Hugh Johnsons World Atlas of Wine

The New Sotheby's Wine Encyclopedia by Tom Stevenson.

both give above average, easy to read reference on just about anything wine related. They cost around $50-$75, a relative bargain compared to what you will invest in a lifetime of wine enthusiasm...
