I have a bit of a dilema. I have been invited to a lovely dinner by a friend of a friend...and he just happens to be quite the wine "expert"! Of course now I feel a little intimidated, and I have no idea what wine to bring with me.

I know that he has quite an extensive Bordeux collection, and also really fancies Rhone wines.

He is a sweet man, an incredible chef, and now a Sommlier! (He just passed the test after studying for 20 years!) I would love to give him an execeptional bottle as a gift!

Any suggestions???

How about a nice hunk of cheese? Is there something that says you have to bring wine? If so, do you know what the wine is for? Aperitif, part of meal, dessert, his cellar? If you don't know, but think you must bring wine, recommend a dessert wine. That's what I bring whenever I feel intimidated. You can usually get away with something less expensive than a barn burner for his celler. A 375 ml for $18 or so, makes a nice gift, and is easy on the purse.

Hi IM. If you want to spend 50-60 clameroos I was impressed with the 98 Ch. de Beaucastel CDP.This is one tremendous bottle that any Rhone Lover would cherish. Heitz just relesased their 97 Napa cab at the mid-30s and it is one gorgeous bottle of juice.Sounds like some-one is about to get VERY lucky.(hehehe)WW

IK, I am crazy about the idea of bringing cheese, and/or a dessert wine. Why didn't I think of such?! Also, to Mr. Weenie...thanks for the "juice" idea! I am leaning towards the bottle of 98 Ch. de Beaucastel. We will have to wait and see though! Which one would YOU prefer to recieve WW???

Anyway...I am hoping that SOMEONE gets lucky here! <hehe>

One idea, go for Didier Dagueneau's Silex or Pur Sang Pouilly Fume...I'm sure he'll know it, its distinctive and amazing wine. It'll run you about 40-50 bucks.

WW, so sorry for the ammo that I gave 'bucko'! Oopsssss....

As far as the wine goes, I am sticking with the bottle of Ch. de Beaucastel (If I can find it?!). Of course now I too will be drinking slimfast and water...but only because I won't be able to afford to eat for a while! <haha>

CHEESE! One of my biggest pleasures in life! Very appropriate I suppose.
