Such a novice... what should I look for in a relatively inexpensive and widely-available sparkling wine? I like sweeter wines, but there isn't much selection here.

Hi Comedownnine, and welcome to the Wine Board. Look for a Spanish Cava in Brut or Extra Dry (a wierd sparkling wine term for "off dry"), or an Italian Prosecco.
