I've been drinking wine on and off for a few years and am at a crossroads. I used to enjoy cheap ($8-$12) White Zin but lately it just doesn't tatse right. I had some wonderful Red wine ($45) out in Boston a few months ago but unfortunately we drank so much of it I can't even remember what kind. Since that time I've been trying Zin and just don't enjoy it. I've tried some merlot but don't enjoy the tatse much. I'm looking for a smooth but fruity red that stands as alone. Any sugestions?

Beaujolais, beaujolais, and more beaujolais.

Its a french wine, and thus named after the area its from not the grape. The grape is Gamay (avoid american wines labeled gamay, they usually aren't the same thing).

Georges Dubouef and Louis Jadot are two readily available producers that produce some good quality at a good price.

What you want to look for are the upper level beaujolais (these are the village names of upper level type of beaujolais).

Morgon, Moulin-a-vent, Fleurie, Beaujolais-Villages. These are my favorite types of beaujolais. These will range in price from $8 to $15, so quite reasonable.

Good luck, come back often and tell us what you've tried and what you thought of it.

Hi Pigbat, and welcome to the Wine Board. Barnesy's advice is right on regarding where to start. For additional current and excellent advice go to the posting nearby on this thread called "How to appreciate Merlot." It answered much the same question except it revolved around not liking merlot viz-a-viz your problem with zin.
