At a recent tasting, the moderator suggested that one should not only smell from deep inside the center of the glass, but one should also smell the wine at the edge of the glass. I found this technique brought out the fruit in the red wines we were tasting. I mentioned this to my wine expert friend who derided this technique. Has anyone see this as an accepted wine tasting technique for sampling the aroma? Anyone have any articles that include this as a technique?

Many thanks!!

New one on me. I just like to swirl and sniff. The glass is more important IMHO.

I can't imagine how one sniffs at the edge of a glass without spilling wine. Agree with Bucko.

It amazes me how many theories there are about something so simple as consuming wine...
