Some Novice type questions here

Bought some wines from a friend who owns a wine shop and I know nothing about them, except he said they were worth my time and money. Hope someone can shed some light on these three. I'd appreciate it.

That is a fair question, and I asked it myself hundreds of time, until I took the less beaten path and started buying wines that I haven't tried before. It is good to do research on them but nothing bets pulling the cork and tasting them.

I don't know those wines but for the names, I would expect to be interesting. [img]http://www.wines.com/ubb2/biggrin.gif[/img]

One flag for quality would be the retail price. This is not true all the time but the price will give you an idea of what to expect in terms of quality.

So drink up and post some notes.

Solaria

Ruby with garnet highlights. On the nose aromas of plums, violets, and nutmeg awaken the senses and are accented on the palate with vanilla, red currant and tobacco. Medium-bodied with smooth tannins and fresh acidity provide for a seductive finish.

Schloss Schonborn is a reasonable producer of reasonably inexpensive wines in the $15-$20 area (which is where this one is). Their spatlese are a bit more money. Solid producer but not in the top ranks IMHO (not like an August Kessler or JJ Prum or someone like that).
