Welcome to the board, Stewart. Check out http://www.stratsplace.com/maps.html.

In hard-cover form, recommend the Larousse Encyclopedia of Wine, a prime reference in our house.

Sorry- This isn't really a reply, but more of a question prompted by a question.
I thought it was possible to produce wine just about anywhere you can build a winery and that the vineyards are what can only be in certain areas??

It is indeed possible to make wine anywhere. It's even possible to grow grapes vitually anywhere (in the temperate zone of this fair globe). But over the centuries, some grape varieties have been found to flourish in particular areas, due to soil and climate conditions, while not doing well in others. For example, here in South Central Texas, some people persist in trying to make decent Cabernet Sauvignon from grapes grown in this area. It's a fool's game. During the growing season, the daytime temps are too high and the night time temps not cool enough. Sangiovese and Tempranillo might do OK (the jury's still out), some producers make fairly decent Barbera and Syrah, but most cool/moderate climate grapes are a bust.
