Welcome to the Wine Board, irishdoc. I'd say the Piccolo is worth about what you paid for it, maybe a few dollars more.

Thanks for the reply. However I recieved it as a gift from an estate, so I have no idea of it's worth. Thanks again

I was guessing that would be the case. Another guess is that is cost around $130. Another guess, is that is wasn't worth it. Have not seen a good review on that wine. One hope is that it fleshed out better in the larger bottle. If you don't want to drink it yourself, you might put it on E-bay of Wine-bid. If you really want to get rid of it, take an early bid. Remember to post your S&H; it will be high.

OK. Viansa wines are not sold at retail - they're only available through the winery and at their distribution warehouses in MA and GA (maybe one more, too). They have a wine club that the majority of their offsite sales are made to, and those are the folks who would buy wine in larger formats. The Tuscan Club price for a 750ml bottle of Piccolo back when the 95 came out was about $15 (currently @$20), which would make the 3 liter about $60, or a bit more. It's a Sangiovese made in a lighter style and Viansa suggests that it be drunk fairly young. If it's been kept in very good storage, it's probably still drinkable, but may have hit its peak.

KC's information indicates the wine has little or no worth beyond its resale value. You certainly won't get rich on it--invite some friends, have a party and open it.

Decided to try a Piccolo to see how they're doing, so I opened our oldest bottle, a 1998 750ml that's been in our celar since it came out. The color was turning to brick, the nose was fairly nice and bright, the taste was cherry and raspberry, the finish was a bit short. Not a bad quaff, but I think it was a lot brighter a few years ago. Definitely at, or very near, its peak.
