I've not had any type of alcohol before and would like to try some type of a wine. I got some tips on the board about what to try, but I have no idea what everyone is talking about when they talk about tasting "techniques". Could someone explain this to me?

Hi Premier, and welcome to the Wine Board. You don't have to worry about tasting technique until you get quite aways down the wine trail. For now, just sniff, drink, and enjoy.

Don't know what part of TN you live in, but there are wineries throughout your state. Look up the TN Wine Association on Google, and find one near you, and visit it soon. You will be able taste a wide variety of wines, and begin to form an idea of what you like. Then you can go to a retailer and ask for wines like those you know you like. Keep the relationship going with the nearby winery as well.

Prem, a TN winery I can recommend is Orr Mountain Winery, 355 Pumpkin Hollow Rd, Madisonville, TN 37354, tel 423.442.5340. They had a very nice unoaked Chardonnay when I was there several years ago.

For a free brochure on TN wineries, contact the TN Dept. of Agriculture Market Division at 615.837.5160, or wirte to them at P.O. Box 40627, Nashville, TN 37204.

And for a list of those wineries, descriptions of their products and directions to their facilities, see http://picktnproducts.org/wineries/directory.html
