Yes, another newbie. I generally don't like alcohol, but accepted the offer to taste a wine at Olive Garden a couple of months ago. (please don't throw anything). I really liked it, and now am very interested. It was a blush, and I bought another bottle at New Year's. Yesterday I bought a Merlot, for no other reason than I like the way the word sounds (PLEASE don't throw anything!), and the label description of the 1997 Meridian Vineyards bottle sounded great. I plan to try it tonight. Should I chill it briefly? I know the recommeneded temp is in the 60's range, but how do I take that temp? I feel so dumb, but also so excited. This new world will be a fun one!

Welcome! Set your thermostat to 65 degrees well before you plan on drinking it, then enjoy.

Or check the temperature of the room you and wine are in. Put wine in refrigerator for ten minutes for each degree you want to chill the wine down to 65 degrees.

Wow, thanks for the fast response.
It is a bit cool here in San Antonio today, and the house is cool too. I appreciate your advice. I have been reading the board for a couple of hours, and have seen both your names repeatedly. You both struck me as knowledgable, and I feel priviledged that you answered my call!

What I did, till I got used to being able to feel the temp with my hands, is buy a cheap digital meat thermometer. Make sure it has a range that goes down into the teens or lower. Mine is -40 on up...

Its got a long metal probe which is perfect for sticking down the neck of a newly opened wine bottle. Within a few seconds you will have your reading. Simple, cheap, accurate.

Ha Ha! Glad I've got you fooled! I would harldy consider myself knowledgable. I'm quite the newbie myself. But thanks for the complement!

Being a newbie myself, I bought a wine thermometer! I love it! And I figure that if I use it enough, then I'll start getting the hang of how it feels at certain temps. :-)
