i am going to start collecting wines

i have never really been into wines but then i thought of something to collect with a profet and wines came into my mind. i was think if you could sujest some red wines that i can buy in australia. this would be a big help if you could help me.

Hi Brock and welcome to the board. I'm confused. First you say you're not into wines and then that you want to start collecting them for Profit? Wines are for enjoying and socializing, for hedonistic pleasures, and, I'm sure, as with most on the board and certainly myself, not a commodity. Some good advice from WW. Here's some more info to help you decide one way or the other. Some of the best current collectibles are the California Cult Cabs. For instance, you could get a Screaming Eagle direct from the winery, and sell it on the auction market for four times what you paid the day you get it. You have to be on the customer mailing list to get SE or any of the other cult wines. The problem is that all those mailing lists are currently full and many of the waiting lists to get on the mailing lists are also full. There can be a five to ten year wait to get from the waiting list to the mailing list. So, that collectible avenue may be out. You could probably start buying Bordeaux futures, but that entails some good knowledge of the wines to know the best vintages to buy in. You'd also need to buy full cases of many different wines, which could run into maybe US$20K to US$30K a year, or more. You could also get a few cases of your own Penfold's Grange at about US$1500 per case each year. Then you need to invest in a climatically controlled storage facility to keep the wines for a few years before reselling them. So, if you do that as an investment tool, you can count on having about US$300K to US$500K continuously tied up in wine and storage over the first five years. Then when you decide to start selling in five years, you have to hope the wines have aged well and there actually is a real market for them. It goes on and on, but that's how the real investors do it. I don't think there are many of them here.
