christening gift for drinking in 20 years

I want to give a bootle of port or wine as a christening gift that can be laid down to drink in 18 to 20 years - any suggestions as to what would be a good buy?

Hi Wendy, and welcome to the Wine Board. You might check and see what the parents like. If that doesn't work you'll have to guess what the child will like in 20 years. The next thing you need to determine is whether the wine can be stored properly for 20 years. Temps much above 70 degrees F or much under 40 degrees F will ruin wine. So will low humidity (the cork dries out).

If you want to go the Port route, look for Vintage Porto. It is not produced every year. You will not get a good one for less than $100. If you want a table wine, recommend a Brunello Di Montalcino. Can be had for around $50. The 2000 vintage of Bordeaux wines will be released next year and it is supposed to be a great one. You could probably pick one up that will go 20 for around $25. California Cabernet and Australian Shiraz are two others you could consider. You have to be very picky, and plan to spend at least $50.
