wine glasses

I don't know too much about wine but just wondered if there is a certain type wine glass good for different wines.

Oscar night....board is rather quiet....must be that everyone is pulling a pinot noir and counting down.....

Anyways, welcome aboard from a fellow newbie. Glass do make a big difference in the way wine is enjoyed but I think that there is a fine line between reasonable and .. "either you are really rich or" ....

There are lots of styles out there. To get an idea, I would suggest that you look at the website for Riedel (a wine glass maker) as they have all the styles and all the associated wines that they work for displayed visually. You will find that even within their voluminous list, there are different shapes for the same wine (i.e. Burgundy, Sommelier level has a outward curving lip whereas the extreme and the vinum do not).

I'm sure others will be onboard soon to explain why certain wines need certain glasses but the riedel site should give you a good start.

I think the idea is that each wine has a different taste obviously and your toungue only can sense 4 tastes. Therefore the purpose of each glass is to direct the wine to the particular part of the toungue that will provide said wine with the best effect.

Hi Texas Gal and welcome to the board.As you get more into wine good glassware is indeed important. The primary function of a good wine glass is to accentuate the olfactory sense which in turn accentuates the tasting intensity. Nothing substitutes for a good schnozz. WW
