starting a wine club

a group of friends and i are starting a wine club. i have very little knowledge of what to do. i will be the first host and my region is the finger lakes. i am headed up there so i will be grabbing a few bottles. i know i want dr. franks rkatsiteli b/c it is so unusual. i am aslo going to find herman wiemers riesling. any other suggestions??? i need all of the help that i can get! thanks so much!!!

Hi Xian and welcome to the board. The 3 most memorable wines IMHO were the Glenora Champagnes, both the 99 Brut and the Blanc de Noirs, plus the only Red that jingled my chimes, Glenoras' Cabernet Franc. The last one was a beautiful Late Harvest something that, as I don't have my receipt can't remeber either the wine or vineyard, so maybe KC can recall and post on it. I loved the Vignoles from Anthony Road, the Dutchman's Breeches from Knapp, and the Lemberger from Fox Run to name a few that I purchased over the weekend.

For "whole liners" would go with Dr K, Glenora, Knapp, and Wagner. As a matter of fact you can do both of the lines at Dr K's including their Salmon Run brand. Also liked the Lemberger at Fox Run, as well as their Cab Franc. Liked the Riesling at Anthony Road as well as at Wiemer's. In the past have enjoyed Heron Hill's Eclipse which is a Meritage type with Cab Franc upfront. Another winery I'd recommend on hearsay is Logan Ridge. Be sure not to miss the whole line of three "ice wines" at Wagner; all wonderful.

In any event, there are 75 plus wineries in the Finger Lakes--about 40 of them produce truly world-class wines.

I think the sticky WW's referring to might be the Wagner Riesling Ice Wine. Though I liked a number of them, that was the only one I bought.

Wiemer's Pinot Noir is one of the best (if the best IMHO) Pinot I've had for under $15. I like the semi-dry better than the dry Riesling. Just my $0.02.

When you purchase the wines be sure to ask for the tasting notes (usually a very short description of the wine) and product information sheets (the winemaker's notes which are much more extensive). The winemakers notes will usually give you the date of harvest, Brix, pH, acid and the winemakers description of the wine. These will be very helpful to you and your group when you taste and discuss the wines.
