I have a bottle of port that i need help with the identification, and was wondering if someone could compare a couple of their bottles with my markings to find out what mine is.
I do know that it is a Fonseca.
the year is the question. it is either 27, 45, 48, or 63.
The bottle is a straight neck bottle with a soft plyable lead foil that is a silverish color. On top of the bottle is
what looks like an old time gothic diagram. (like a letter set inside of sheild), there is lettering around the edge of the top. I cannot make out much of any of these.
The bottom of the bottle has a deep punt. it also has 4 markings inside the punt area. 1. is the letter g in a circle. 2. directly across from the letter g is the number 299. 3. the letter f at a 90 degree angle from the others. and 4. directly across from the letter f is what looks like the letter i.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Drutzen and welcome to the board. From your description I think it's the 63, which is a killer VP. WW

ww.
thanks for the help. Is there a major reason you feel it was the 63, (reason I ask is that I had 3 other 63's and can't remember what they looked like and I thought I had purchased and older one also at the same time). if I pull the cork for a taste, do you think the cork was made with years printed on them?

" If I pull the cork for a taste?"...... If you pull the cork, the vintage is printed on the ones I've had but, be prepared to drink the bottle within the week as it won't hold much longer. If you need help, call.WW

I can't offer any help whatsoever, but I just had to jump in. When I first saw the subject, I thought this must be someone with a psychological problem, asking for help with their id.

The topic does have that Freudian ring, doesn't it?

Late at night, while the beastly Id is sleeping, exhausted from a long day of debauchery and wretched excess, the downtrodden Superego sneaks onto the internet to plead for aid . . . all it gets is an offer from WW to be it's drinking buddy.

They didnt make a vintage in 45, because of the war. So 63 is a good guess. Also there are two houses of Fonseca in Portugal. Jose Maria de Foncesa (in Azeitao) and Fonseca (Gaia) which is british owned. Its a typical name in Portugal. Yours sounds like the first one since their logo is a JMF with a shield being made of the J and F with the M in the middle. They have a wonderful port that is TA, trans-atlantic, sails to Brazil and back in barrels while aging with the motion of the waves.

Nice to hear from a presumed Port expert. What are some of your personal favorites (available and affordable--say under $35 a bottle).

What a strange name but welcome to the board anywhoos. Was just in San Diego last week and spent some time with my friend John at Vintage. Been doing biz with him since he opened on Miramar. WW

I got some wines there and ate at the restaurant above last fall on WW's recommendation. Recommend to others headed to San Diego.
