Burgenland, Austria. The Zweigelt grape was created by a Swiss scientist who cobbled together parts and reanimated a body in an old castle in Bavaria . . . no, wait, I think I'm getting this confused. Right. It was an Austrian scientist, and he crossed the St. Laurent with the Blaufrankish (aka Lemberger) to create the Zweigelt. Anyway, it typically shows sweet cherry flavors, some spiciness, refined tannins and a medium body. This example had interesting coffee ground and toffee elements and brisk acidity. Food friendly and 13% alc. We paid about $15 for it. Nice change from the usual stuff.

I occasionally get a chance to have this varietal. I really kinda do like it especially in the way the Austrias do it, a little austere. Thanks for the heads up!
