2002 Joseph Swan Mourverdre

Easily the best examplr of this varietal I've had. Deep ruby. Nose of red fruits, vanilla and a scooch of dill. All come over on the palate with the addition of some earthy barnyard notes. Has some tannins that will need 3-6 to resolve. Especially good with a light lunch of steamed zucchini and roast pork tenderloin. Nice entry, medium weight center and a 3&3/4th lapper finish. 88/89. 25 on futures. 14.5% alc. WW

I've never heard of Mourverdre (probably a lot varietals I've not heard of) -- what kind of grape is it? Did it originate in France?

Mourvedre is one of the grapes of the Rhone. It is normally blended with Syrah and perhaps other varieties but can be quite nice as a single varietal. The only one I've had and enjoyed was the Cline Small Berry Mourvedre.

Willow Crest Winery in Washington is bottling a nice Mourvedre this year. We sampled it from the barrel in August and were quite impressed.

Also, lots of dandy old vine Monastrell coming out of Spain. Great P/Q wines.

I was misspelling Mourverdre. It has three "r's" and I was leaving out the second one. I'll try to remember.

My error on the spelling..... there's only 2 rs' in this bugger. Another case of the active fat-fingers of the weener onect thems get revved up. Had another last nite and the nose is definately expanding. Will try to show some restraint on the remaining bottles. No change in scoring. WW

Just curious, if pork tendeloin is a light lunch, then what makes a heavy lunch?

My big meal is at lunch. Normally have fresh fruit, cottage cheese, and fat-free cool whip or some such for my evening meal. WW

An update on this lovely but strange wine. Seems like the nose has evolved with more emphasis on the earthy elements. In the mouth there's also more tart cherry than previously with passion-fruit notes on the back. Good drinking. WW
