Gruner Veltliner

My wife just got back from Austria. She says the 2003 Gruner Veltliners aren't much to get excited over.

The two I have had in the states bera witness to her findings. It was that hot summer that did in the usually aromatic, acidic grapes.

For her, it was business, with a little time to get around. She especially likes Giorgione paintings, and Vienna has him in the museum.

Me, I don't go to northern Europe in winter--in the Finger Lakes, "I got my snow to keep me cold..."

From what I've been reading, you have more than your share of cold. Looks like a lot of wineries will be scrambling to find enough juice just to meet expected sales. Reports say there may not be any Gewurz at all in FL, not to mention other varieties. Tough luck. How's Glenora looking?

KC, I've talked to a couple of people and they say the bud losses this year are no worse than normal. They attribute the fact to two things: the vines were already hardened off well before the temp. drops, and there was some snow cover; the temp. drop was not sudden right after a warm spell.

Don't know about Gewurztraminer, but what you heard might have to do with there being no G from last vintage.

The last and biggest storm we had here was the wettest I've ever seen anywhere. When I went to shovel it the next morning, the water had seeped through to the bottom and frozen. I thought, well there goes all our floriculture. Hope you didn't have anything like that there.
