As I have said, there are some grape vareties that have no place in the region. Then, there are others that have a tentative place in the region. And then there are others that do ok, no matter what the reagional weather throws at them.

In my view, it's much better to cultivate your strength and let go of the others.

So, which are the strengths, and which are the others? I would assume Riesling has to be one of the strengths. You realize, of course, that this would never happen in AZ (not that I would want to do any serious grape growing there)

Let's just say there are cool climate varieties (or varieties that do better in cool climates) and there are others. If you grow in a cool climate--well, then...

The first variety I would rule out is Cabernet Sauvignon--Merlot is not too far behind. These guys truly are problematic in the region, and it isn't just because it's a cool climate--it's because it is an erratic and cool climate.

So, Riesling, Rkatseteli and maybe Cab Franc?

Yep, and some others can make it reasonably well most of the time, like Pinot Noir and even Chardonnay--Fr/American hybrids too.
