Is it wrong that this bothers me?

I'm supposedly the wine geek, and Anne supposedly could care less and only drinks the stuff (and provides most of the funding for this liquid hobby). I mean, she doesn't even glance at the issues of the monthly wine rags that arrive in the mail, doesn't read wine books, hasn't taken classes or seminars, etc. She just doesn't care about wine in any sort of intellectual or pedantic way. Yet, she constantly does stuff like this:

She asks me for a Pinot Noir this evening. I go downstairs, poke through the cellar for awhile, select one, pop it, pour it into the decanter, and bring the decanter upstairs without the bottle. I pour a glass for Anne, hand it to her, and she sniffs and takes a drink. Then she says, "It's an Acacia from Carneros."

I mean, we've got something along the lines of 200-250 Pinots in the house, from New Zealand to Willamette, from Anderson Valley to Beaune. Yet, she routinely does stuff like this. I have no idea how she does it. She couldn't even tell me what a Carneros Pinot is SUPPOSED to taste like. Still, she nailed it!

Frankly, it kinda bugs me, in a good-natured way, of course.

I have the same thing here. Judy can tell a wine from a particular producer even if it a different vintage of a wine she hasn't had for a few years. Scary!!

Most of my female friends who like wine are very much into the aromatics like PN's, Viognier, Rieslings, whereas my male friends are more into the heavier hitting cabs. In fact, they were nailing established Rioja producers left and right too regardless of level.

The women are definitely more able to distinguish between what I perceive to be nuances and they view as more character....

I think your wife may have a genetic sensory talent Dan but I'm not buying it overall. My wife loves all good red wine but only tells me she approves of the wines I select by saying "yummy". If I try to quiz her on the complexities of the wine she sez " I don't know, I just want to drink it, not analyze it". She can't tell you a Petite Syrah from a Pinot Noir.

Thank the Lord my CB drinks only SWs' so I don't get embarrassed. Eng is rite on in his observatioon that the lovely girls seem to be more sensory observant than us guys. See it occassionally at the club with some of the regular couples. The girls nail the descriptors far more often than hubby. WW

It's been studied and is a fact that women have better sensory perception than men.

Something to do with evolving from hunter gatherers: we the hunters; they the gatherers. Gatherers needed to smell the poisons out!

When I made wine, I always asked for my wife's opinion before I finished and bottled it. Sometimes, I even listened to her opinion [img]http://wines.com/ubb/wink.gif[/img]

Well, I suppose my ego is comforted in knowing I'm not alone. Anne is, somewhat annoyingly however, much like Drew's wife, in that she never attempts to distinguish and/or identify the aromas and flavors in a wine, and all I usually get from her is some variant of "yummy." When pressed, she usually says, "It smells like wine" or "It tastes like wine."

Oh, well. However she does it, it's a neat trick which, at the very least, provides amusement for me in the evenings!

And, KC, if memory serves, Judy was invariably spot-on when we toured WA with you a few summers back. It didn't take her any time at all to separate the great from good, and good from bad wines we were tasting. I even remember her comparing from memory to past vintages she had tried.

I was at a wine tasting a few weeks ago (small gathering). When the bottle was popped, the predominantly female crowd all said in one hushed voice in concert..

" c o r k e d ....."

All us guys....we needed confirmation in our glasses and still some of us had to take a second snife...... I was pretty humbled at that point....

I have to say, Dan, Anne's feat impresses me! I haven't performed very well at blind tastings. She must have a super nose for wines.
