A friend of my recently made a New Year's resolution to taste through all of the 1855 classified growths (what a guy...the rest of us puts restraints on and he goes over the top....or as they say today, "over the couch").

Curious, if anyone here has done that or has thought actively about doing that. Be just as expensive to try all the Grand and 1er cru's of Burgundy, but may be more fun to taste down the Mosel or the Duoro.....by boat.....

You made me curious. Of the 61 first through fifth growths, I've had 34. I've never even heard of a few of them.

Not many of us have the kind of resources I imagine that would take, however, I have thought about doing both a France and Germany trip. I believe I would rather do the boat trip and tastings down the Mosel. I have not looked into it yet. I wonder if they also do trips that combine with the Saar and Ruer rivers? That may be a bit too much for one trip.

Not only would you get the great wines, but when you consider the scenery, to me it's a "no brainer".

Bucko, I had thought that you would be one of the potentials that may have done this. You are right thought, it is interesting. When he told me, I nearly fell off my chair as it was something that I had never even considered, never crossed my mind to do that.

Bern, Yeah...I added up the retail cost to do it for the year 2000 and then fell of my chair a second time..... It would take a bit of resources to do this in one year. Needless to say, I did not make the same resolution.

Over my drinking career I've had all of the 1sts'& 2nds. Too hard to look up the 3rds, 4ths', and 5ths I've drunked. Did manage to go thru almost 100 cases of 82s. At present have 35 cases of 2000s'resting comfy and will start drinking the better stuff in the next few months. Killed lots of babies early on in my Bordeaux career. WW

"to go thru almost 100 cases of 82s"

Just fell off my chair again......I'm sure when I'm older, my grandkids will tell what a bargain I got when I purchased my 2000's and I'll remember when taxes were low, politicians were honest and the world was a nicer place.

That's just a little over 4 cases a year. Not so bad.

I guess you'd also have to figure out which listed wineries aren't in existence any more.

Me neither. I stick to other regions of France myself. Too expensive for my blood, plus I am just not the biggest fan of cab/merlot wines.

In reply to Bernkastler, the Mosel scenery is absolutely gorgeous. If you do this trip, be sure to include a visit to Burg Eltz at Moselkern, along with the Heidelberger Schloss my favorite German castle. Koln-Dusseldorfer line runs cruises on the Rhein in the also beautiful Rheingau area (Cologne to Rudesheim, etc.) and on the Mosel from Koblenz. See also http://www.bingen-ruedesheimer.com/rhine-cruise/ for Mosel and Rhine River cruises.

Thanks Wonders,

It's something I have wanted to do for 25 years, and I should have done it 25 years ago, because now it's going to be much more difficult for a number of reasons. Such is life. I will check out the website you recommended.
