Aaargh!!

I christened the cellar floor yesterday with its first bottle of red wine--1998 St. Innocent Freedom Hill. It had a lovely bouqet. The lord giveth and the lord taketh away.

Once, when I was the beverage director at Antoine's in New Orleans, I broke a magnum of Cask 23 Cab from Stags' Leap in the cellar and it splashed all over a brand new pair of expensive Italian shoes (light brown). I looked at my stained and splotched footwear, got a towel and rubbed every drop of that wine into every inch of those loafers and they had a wonderful Burgundy / Tobacco glow ever after and my feet smelled good too!

Hmmm..shoe dye..now that coulda been another suggestion for the guy with the 79 yr old Rioja in the Collectibles thread last week! Although his feet might smell like vinegar afterward. cp

That happened in '84 while unpacking the then current vintage so maybe '78 or '79??? Anyone else remember when wine was released with ANY bottle age on it???

Caymus SS Heitz Marthas' and Simi, Ferrari-Carano, and Ch. St. Jean Reserves are all released the 4th yar after the vintage. WW

I don't have the pleasure of a cellar yet.... just a 72 bottle rack I keep in the darkest, coolest place in the house. It happens to be a closet.

About three weeks ago, the shelving caved in. Everything in the closet tumbled down around the wine rack, clothes, sewing box, computer discs, all kinds of stuff. When I first opened the closet door I heard a hissing sound and could not tell where it was coming from.

I feared the worse. There are five bottles of 1990 Dom on the top of the rack!

Later investigation showed that the hissing sound was coming from a battery operated radio that had been somehow turned on when it feel from the shelving.

Was I ever relieved........... and lucky.

But, I am curious as to when this practice stopped being a norm?
