Wonders seems to think that Washington is putting out pretty decent Syrah. So when my local pusher had a tasting that included a few, I made a move of faith and headed up for the tasting.

What a lovely wine. I tasted six heavy reds and this was the best one. One of the best wines that I have tasted in the past several months with lovely black fruit on the nose, then a tremendous burst of coffee and chocolate on the palate. Good structure holds it all together in a medium bodied package that has good concentration, but is not too over the top.

In short, I absolutely loved it. This wine is made by John Duval who is the winemaker for Penfolds Grange. Great wine, but very expensive at close to 60 bucks a bottle. I am still considering whether or not I stock up on it given the very competitive price range.

Mark

Sorry guys, this is Long Shadows, not Long Fellows. Yikes.

I agree. Here is my note:

2003 Sequel, Syrah, Columbia Valley, Washington, $55, 700 cases. Almost black in color, this big boy reveals blackberry, black cherry, smoked game and vanilla notes on the nose. Full, rich, and juicy on the palate, with the flavors echoing the aromas; 91/91.

Too pricy though. I've rather drink Rhone for less.
