A Halloween porch wine this year, as I felt it was fitting.

It's the second one I've had, and this one showed better than the 1st, which I had in Feb. Not as dark a color as one would anticipate, more like a darker ruby. Nose of crushed raspberry. Good fruit, rounded tannins. Nice quaffer, but wouldn't say it was much more. Medium length finish, and the alc. (13%) was not present. Paid about $15 locally. Did the job in getting the evening started, and all seemed to enjoy it. Of course, the label was a big hit.

Is the wine produced from Tannat? or is the reference to Madiran just a tribute?

It's definitely produced from Tannat - from Madiran. The first versions of HoD were so tannic, they were almost undrinkable. Now they're quite enjoyable. Give Randall credit for willing to try almost anything.

What a great name for a wine. Bonny Doon never ceases to amuse and entertain, along with sending along some fairly decent wines.

Yes, based upon the grape and my bottle earlier in the year, I was expecting it to be much more tannic than it turned out to be.

Speaking of tannat, I have a '95 Chateau Montus Madiran sitting in my cellar that I was planning to give 10 to calm down. That sound right to you all?

Also, anyone try any tannat from Uruguay yet?

The Montuse could wait a couple more years. I have had Uruguay tannat at the store; it was ok and priced right. I'll get you the name if you want it. Catamayor, I think.

Although tannat is touted as the malbec of Uruguay. It still has not done for that tiny country what malbec has done for Argentina. Argentina has put its own stamp on malbec. Uruguay has not come up with a wine equal to Madiran IMHO. Have tried a couple.

Sorry, I'm a lousy speller as all you know. Was just following the spelling above me.

I tried a tannat wine at one of the Virginia wineries. Wasn't too thrilled by it.
