First time on the board. Good to be on. I usually have a Japanese beer when I eat sushi but I was wondering if anyone can suggest a good wine that would pair nicely with sushi?

Sancerres, Savenierres, Pinot Gris or the Italian version, Pinot Grigio, all work well with sushi.

TCab,

There was an interesting discussion about Sushi and wine on this board many moons ago...

You can still read these words of wisdom, including comments from our past moderator, Jerry Mead, at the following link. You'll have to copy and paste it into the top of your browser.

BTW, I found this by going to the "search" link above and typing in "sushi".

A very interesting and informative thread, that is for sure.

I was interested in the information about the Viognier. The French version is very nice and is quite low in alcohol. Were Randy and Bucko just talking about the viognier from Cali?

Condrieu, Condrieu...... the Viogniers out of CA can be a little too fruity and have too much alcohol, seeming hot, all IMHO of course.

Good sake or Japanese beer seem to be near the top as far as the "best match" is concerned so far as I can determine.

However, if wine is the choice then it should lean towards being light, high acid, with little or no residual sweetness. (Which tends to shoot down trying Viognier which is a medium bodied wine - but I'd be willing to give it a try only if it were the French variety.)

However, I am not convinced that I would want to quaff the wine with the sushi. With the soup before sushi and then as a thirst quencher after sushi might be the course I'd take. I tend to believe that the sushi should stand by itself when crossing the palate (along with a little soy and wasabi, of course).

I agree with the above -- sushi is meant to be savored alone, or with your usual beer & sake. Though I did try a Bonny Doon wine this weekend that had pictures of sushi on the bottle. I think it was called Pacific Rim Riesling?? The name and pix might just be a marketing ploy. Can't tell, since I only had a taste and not with food.

We almost exclusively drink beer with sushi. However, we have on one occasion found sushi and Chablis to be a good match. ddf

We have found that sushi goes excellent with a sparkling wine or Champagne. Just last week we paired a Kenwood Cuvee Natural with a Salmon Sushi Roll.
What do ya'll think??

We are semi-famous for our Champagne and Sushi tastings, a marriage made in heaven! Go for grower Champagnes from the Cotes du Blanc: Pierre Peters, Jean Milan, Lillebert, Guy Larmandier. Or, if you need to save a buck or two, Prosecco di Valdibbiadane Superiore Cartize from Ruggeri or Bisol goes down might fine. For still wines, you cannot beat Austrian Gruner Veltliners or almost anything from Alto Adige.
