August Kesseler Tasting

August Kesseler stopped by for a tasting and I got a chance to sample six of his wines. Overall, rather impressed with his wines and his no-nonsense approach. (paraphasing somewhat 'We needed another brand. R sells for a lower price so that it would sell well with the per glass sales at restaurants)

2002 Rüdesheimer Berg Roseneck Riesling Spätlese Trocken: Nosed like a non-Trocken Riesling so my tongue was unprepared for the acidity. Very dry but still retained all the fruit notes with a crisp acidity and nice slate minerality.

2002 Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg Riesling Spätlese Trocken: Wow. what a difference a 7 iron makes in the Rheingau. This one is fully in nose and taste with a nice density of flavors as compared to it sister vineyard.

2001 Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg Riesling Spätlese Goldkapsel: Nice mouthfeel with great balance of acidity, sweetness and minerality. Fruit of green apple and pear(?).

2003 August Kesseler "Estate" Riesling: Ripe fruit at front and a nice lush mouthfeel. Very little minerality in wine as compared to 2001 and 2002's tasted.

2003 August Kesseler R Riesling: Different than the Estate bottle, more green apple and lemon rind, pear and a nice freshness to it. Little minerality as well.

2003 August Kesseler Spätburgunder Trocken. Pinot Noir German style unabashed and I like it. Very subtle, light in color with unresolved tannins and a bit of an herbal quality and some minerality. Nice clarity of wine....no other place this pinot could come from other than Germany.
